As an organized adult, you know the benefits of a tidy home and structured routines, but getting your kids to embrace organization? That’s another story! The good news is that organization is a learned skill, and with the right strategies, you can teach your children habits that will serve them for life.
Here are three action plans to help your kids become more organized in a way that’s simple, fun, and easy to maintain:
1. The Daily Reset Routine
Kids thrive on consistency. Set a “Reset Time” at the same time every day- before dinner or bedtime works well- where everyone spends 5-10 minutes putting things back in their place. To make it fun, turn on music or set a timer and race to finish before it buzzes. This builds a habit of tidying up without making it feel like a chore.
2. Label and Contain Everything
Kids are more likely to keep things organized when they know exactly where everything belongs. Use clear bins, baskets, or drawer dividers and label them with pictures for younger kids or words for older ones. For example, create a labeled bin for LEGO pieces, a basket for stuffed animals, or a “homework station” to keep school supplies in one spot.
3. Give Them Ownership
Involve kids in the organizing process by letting them decide where things should go and how they want to store their favorite items. If they feel ownership over their space, they’ll be more likely to keep it tidy. For example, let them choose between hooks or a shoe rack for their entryway shoes or pick a favorite color for storage bins.
The key to raising organized kids isn’t about perfection- it’s about consistency, small habits, and making it easy for them to succeed. By leading by example and using simple systems, you’ll set them up for a lifetime of organization!
